Households across Britain have been warned about a widespread kitchen practice that could harm both their plumbing and the planet. Experts told people “don’t pour milk down the sink”.

Getting rid of old milk can be tricky. When you've got a small amount remaining in the bottle or carton that's gone off, you might not want to bin it due to the smell and possible leaks.

However, pouring it down the drain isn't the solution either. Scottish Water has issued guidance urging people to avoid tipping milk down the sink.
