A man who engaged in a shoot-out with police officers after allegedly committing family violence against his partner has been found dead.

ACT Police visited a property in Canberra's south on Saturday night to arrest a man for serious family violence offences against his partner who is being treated in hospital.

When police arrived, the 71-year-old fired multiple shots at officers who returned fire before he barricaded himself in a shed on the property.

No officers were injured during the shoot-out.

The man refused to engage with police which led to the Australian Federal Police tactical response team, bomb response team and specialist negotiators attending.

They attempted to negotiate with him and eventually entered the shed just before midnight, where they found the man deceased with
