Madurai, Nov 22: Madras High Court stayed trial court proceedings in four custodial torture cases registered against Balveer Singh (IPS: 2020: TN).

The court passed the interim order while hearing the criminal revision petitions filed by Singh challenging the orders passed by the Tirunelveli judicial magistrate (JM) I court, framing charges against him in the custodial torture cases.

Singh stated that he was posted as ASP of Ambasamudram sub-division in Tirunelveli district with effect from Oct 18, 2022. He was in charge of six police stations in the Ambasamudram sub-division and Manjolai estate region, which is manned by a police outpost.

The sub-division over which he had charge for law enforcement was highly prone to animosities between different sections of society on caste lines.
