Perth has retained its position as Australia’s most unaffordable capital city for renters for the second year running, climbing to the top of the list after once being listed as the country’s most affordable.

The National Shelter Economics and Planning Rental Affordability Index, which compares median rent to average income, found Perth also recorded the largest drop in affordability, down a further 4 per cent from last year’s record low.

Perth’s median rent now consumes 32 per cent of an average rental household’s income – higher than Sydney and Adelaide which sit at 30 per cent.

In 2021, the median rent took up just 21 per cent of household income in Perth.
