In a memo released Nov. 10, the Federal Aviation Administration formalized new rules for arrival and departure routes in the airspace surrounding Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport. The changes come amid tension between the airport, nearby local governments, and residents who continue to have aircraft noise and safety concerns.
Testing for those new routes started in June, when the FAA sent out an internal memo informing its air traffic controllers at the airport of new directives to give pilots on arrival and departure over radio or “other communication methods,” a spokesperson for RMMA said.
RMMA personnel did not receive the June memo and were only made aware of the new route tests after the document was obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request by a citizen in September,
