CJI BR Gavai was speaking to journalists at his residence on Sunday, his last day in office.
CJI BR Gavai said on Sunday, his last day in office, that the collegium system should continue, as it strengthens public trust in the judiciary.
Speaking to reporters at his residence, he also commented on the independence of the judiciary, saying the Supreme Court’s 20 November ruling in the case concerning the time frame for governors and the President to act on bills is fully balanced. CJI Gavai stated:
The judgment did not set a fixed time limit for governors and the President to dispose of bills, but it made it clear that they cannot keep any bill pending indefinitely.
The 52nd CJI Gavai’s term ended on Sunday. He completed his final working day at the Supreme Court on Friday, 20 November.
