The myriad problems facing both the football program and the athletic department at the University of Maryland are obvious. Athletic Director Jim Smith has among the most difficult jobs in the nation, with little financial support and a tepid fanbase. But I believe a recent article fails to pay due credence to the all-important financial considerations facing Mr Smith (“Maryland AD wants more football support. Start with more transparency,” Nov. 21).
The fact is that the University of Maryland is in by far the worst financial position of any Big Ten university, and the institution of revenue sharing presents another massive expense for the athletic department. Retaining Coach Michael Locksley and providing him with the maximum possible resources may well be the best option available, and
