There has been a lot of movement in the coaching carousel this year in college football, with many surprise firings taking place already in the month of November. On top of those firings, though, there have also been a couple of surprising non-firings. For instance, the Wisconsin Badgers announced earlier this season that Luke Fickell would stay on as coach in 2026 despite another down season.
The Florida State Seminoles joined that group of surprise non-firings on Sunday with the announcement that head coach Mike Norvell would not be let go, and will return in 2026 to Tallahassee once again.
Though Norvell went 13-0 in 2023 with the Seminoles, that was followed up by a 2-10 season last year, and a 5-6 season this year, which featured yet another brutal loss on Friday night, this time to the NC State Wolfpack.
According to Yahoo! Sports' Ross Dellenger, "The university president, AD and board are aligned in support of Norvell, who has pledged to make changes in areas of recruiting and player evaluation to enhance FSU’s roster."
Norvell is now 38-33 in his six years at Florida State. It appeared early on that the Seminoles were in for a promising season, which featured an upset win over the No. 8 Alabama Crimson Tide in Week 1 of the season. However, Florida State went on to lose four straight games and six of eight games dating back to September.
They have an important game this coming week against the Florida Gators, where a win will make them bowl eligible. Regardless of whether or not they come out on top, though, it's been stated that Norvell will stick around to try this all again next year.
