New Islington, one of the most coveted residential areas in the city, is known for its trendy bars and picturesque waterways. However, living in this area was once vastly different.
Last week, the Manchester Evening News visited Ancoats before, and spoke to residents who called it home before its gentrification began at the start of the millennium. 'Oh god, you’re not moving to Ancoats are you? ' was Margaret Lightbowne's mother's reply when she told her she was moving there in the early 1960s , soon after she got married.
Back then the area had a bad reputation. Now, that couldn’t be further from the truth. Rapid redevelopment has seen Ancoats and New Islington become one of trendiest and most desirable areas to live in Manchester.
