A slow start and a fast finish has been a winning formula for the Coachella Valley Firebirds this year, and it worked again Friday at Acrisure Arena.
After falling behind 2-0 to the San Diego Gulls in the first period, the Firebirds crawled back for a 3-2 overtime win, with Ben Meyers scoring the winning goal just 53 seconds into the three-on-three period.
The Gulls used their advantage in size and strength to build the early lead, but the Firebirds battled back in a game that saw plenty of pushing and shoving after the whistle, especially in the third period. It was in that third period when Logan Morrizon tied the game on a power play goal, taking a rebound off a shot by Carson Rehkopf and flipping the puck into an wide-open goal and past San Diego goalie Ville Husso.
