The Northwestern Wildcats are national champions in field hockey for the second straight season thanks to a double-overtime thriller Sunday.
Just 14 seconds into the second overtime period, the Wildcats earned a penalty corner, and Maddie Zimmer ultimately fed the ball to Ilse Tromp, whose shot from the circle bounced off Princeton goalkeeper Olivia Caponiti to give Northwestern a 2-1 win and their second consecutive title.
The Wildcats, who had beaten top-seeded North Carolina in the semifinals, also got a goal from Kate Janssen, who scored on a penalty corner in the fourth period to tie things up at 1-1.
Goalkeeper Juliana Boon stopped four shots to help the Wildcat cause.
