Senior midfielder Alex Donoghue re-directed a corner kick across the goal line with 4:34 left in double overtime to give Chatham, No. 8 in the NJ.com Top 20, a thrilling 3-2 victory over No. 10 Shawnee in the NJSIAA Group 3 state championship game on Sunday afternoon at Franklin High School.
The state title is Chatham’s fourth in program history and its second in two years.
Rutgers commit Amanda Thornton tied the game 2-2 with 7:11 remaining in regulation when she headed in a corner kick by sophomore Lucy Arps.
Shawnee had taken a 2-1 lead when junior forward Maddie Zaun scored off an assist from sophomore Sloan Ludwig in the 64th minute.
Shawnee took a 1-0 lead in the 28th minute on a goal by junior midfielder Caitlin Olkowski. Chatham responded with a goal by Arps in the 33rd minute.
