The Braves and right-handed reliever Joel Payamps agreed to a one-year contract worth $2.25 million on Sunday.
Payamps, 31, made two appearances for Atlanta this past season after he was claimed off waivers from the Brewers on Sept. 22. He allowed one run over 2 2/3 innings and was outrighted to Triple-A Gwinnett earlier this month.
A seven-year veteran, Payamps was an integral piece of the Brewers’ bullpen in 2023 and ‘24, logging a 2.78 ERA over 137 games. He struck out 136 batters, walked 35 and had a 1.01 WHIP during that span.
However, Payamps’ ERA ballooned to 6.84 this year while his strikeout rate fell from about 25% to 20.5%. His expected ERA was 7.17 as he gave up a lot of hard contact. That’s highlighted by a 17.1% barrel rate.
