The Montreal Canadiens made roster moves on Sunday, signing forward Alexandre Texier to a one-year, $1 million contract and calling up defenseman Adam Engstrom from the AHL’s Laval Rocket. General manager Kent Hughes announced the decisions on Sunday afternoon. Texier, 26, was placed on unconditional waivers by the St. Louis Blues on Saturday to terminate his contract. He recorded 0 goals and 1 assist in 8 games this season. The Blues had acquired him from the Columbus Blue Jackets in the summer of 2024 in exchange for a fourth-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft. Originally selected by the Blue Jackets in the second round of the 2017 NHL Draft, Texier stands 6 feet 1 inch tall and weighs 196 pounds. He had previously played for Grenoble in France, where he posted 10 goals and 9 assists in 40 games. Last season, he recorded 6 goals and 5 assists in 31 games with the Blues. Texier was in the final year of a two-year, $4.2 million contract. With injuries sidelining forwards Alex Newhook (fractured ankle), Kirby Dach (fractured foot), and Patrik Laine (core muscle injury), Texier is expected to provide depth and experience to the Canadiens. Over his seven NHL seasons, he has accumulated 40 goals and 51 assists in 240 games. Engstrom, a 22-year-old defenseman, had a strong training camp with the Canadiens and was among the final cuts. In 18 games with the Rocket, he recorded 5 goals and 9 assists, along with a plus-8 rating. Engstrom contributed to the Rocket's recent 7-2 victory over the Belleville Senators, scoring one goal and assisting on four others. He will join the Canadiens for their upcoming three-game road trip, which begins Wednesday in Utah. Canadiens head coach Martin St. Louis praised Engstrom's potential, stating, "He showed everything it takes to play in the league. I won’t be surprised if he has a long (NHL) career." Veteran forward Brendan Gallagher also noted Engstrom's development, saying, "He skates really well and he’s poised with the puck. He’s developed really well the last couple of years. You can see the confidence in his game, which is important." Engstrom is the fourth player called up from the Rocket in the last ten days, following forwards Jared Davidson, Joshua Roy, and Florian Xhekaj. Xhekaj made his NHL debut in Saturday's 5-2 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs, contributing an assist and engaging in a fight during his 9:48 of ice time. St. Louis commended the Rocket coaching staff for their role in preparing players for the NHL. "I tip my hat to the staff in Laval," he said. "Because we’ve had a lot of call-ups recently and the guys come and they look ready — they don’t look out of place." The Laval Rocket currently lead the North Division with a 12-6-0 record. The Canadiens will practice at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the CN Sports Complex in Brossard before heading to Utah for their game against the Mammoth on Wednesday at 9:30 p.m. They will also play back-to-back afternoon games on Friday against the Golden Knights in Las Vegas and Saturday against the Avalanche in Colorado, both part of the U.S. Thanksgiving holiday schedule.
