Interim coach Terry Smith says he wants the permanent job at Penn State, and the longtime assistant may soon get his formal chance to make that case.

With the Nittany Lions’ coaching search now having stretched on week, multiple reports indicate the university plans to interview Smith for the full-time position.

Smith is widely respected for his recruiting ties and player relationships, holds one clear advantage over several external candidates that he’s available now. Missouri’s Eli Drinkwitz and James Madison’s Bob Chesney remain in the midst of late-season pushes, limiting when they can meet with Penn State officials.
