The Hawaii Department of Law Enforcement and its partners today collected 510 pounds in illegal fireworks — with nearly 10% of those to be used by professionals only — during a fireworks amnesty event held in Waipahu.

Officials reported collecting a total of 724 pounds of fireworks during a fireworks buyback event, the third and final event of the year. A total of $2,355 in gift cards were given out to individuals who turned in their unused and unwanted fireworks at the Honolulu Police Training Academy.

“Each illegal firework we can get off the streets is a step forward,” said DLE Director Mike Lambert in a news release. “The people who brought fireworks to the amnesty event elevated the effort to protect their families and friends.”
