James Cameron spoke with Vanity Fair breaking down all nine of his feature films.
When talking about Titanic (time stamped above), he mentions that he had doubts about Kate due to her reputation as "Corset Kate" (a typecast moniker because she had been doing a lot of period films at the time), but got over that once he met her, saying "Why would I cast Corset Kate? Lazy casting. I meet her, no it's her. it's her, it was simple."
However he had to convince Leo saying, "He didn't want the part, he didn't want to do it. He knew he should, everybody told him he should do it... you know career move. He didn't want to do it."
