UK households have been warned to stop using their kitchen sponges - IMMEDIATELY. Households across the UK are being urged to look again at one item almost everyone keeps beside the sink.
Experts are warning that the everyday kitchen sponge could be putting health at risk if it is not cleaned or replaced properly. The sponge is used for washing dishes, wiping worktops and cleaning spills, but new findings show it may be far dirtier than many people realise. Its porous surface traps bits of food and moisture, which creates the ideal environment for bacteria to grow.
Some studies have found that a used kitchen sponge can hold more germs than a toilet seat, making it one of the most contaminated items in the home.
