Michael B. Jordan has revealed that he wore different-sized shoes while filming Sinners to help him differentiate between his characters.
In Ryan Coogler's horror, the Black Panther actor plays twins Smoke and Stack, who return home to Mississippi and open a juke joint, which attracts the attention of local vampires.
Jordan reflected on the filming experience as part of BAFTA's Playback video series and revealed that he wore different-sized shoes for Smoke and Stack to help him remember each character's body language and posture.
"You know, I wore bigger shoes for Smoke, because he didn't really move around too much. He was, you know, I had him be grounded," he explained. "I had smaller shoes for Stack, because he was never sitting in one place. So, he always felt like he had to move and kind of be lighter on his feet. So, just little things like that added to, you know, how they held their body when they rest, their face, the cadence in their speech."
The Fruitvale Station actor shared that while his frequent collaborator Coogler created the characters in the script, he wanted to "build them from the ground up" and think about their childhood trauma and pain.
While he did extensive preparation work for his twin characters, Jordan made a deliberate effort to avoid vampire movies, as he didn't want them to affect how he approached playing one.
"Honestly, (I had) no real inspirations when it came to what kind of vampire I was going to be," he continued. "You know, (I) really wanted to be very specific to the world (that) we were creating down there and tried really hard not to watch too many other things to influence what we were trying to make."
Sinners was a huge critical and commercial success when it was released in April, and it is expected to do well this awards season.
BAFTA Playback, sponsored by Samsung, is a six-part series where Hollywood icons talk about their career-defining moments and influences, with selected commentary and clips featured throughout.
