Kia and Hyundai have recalled a combined 333,590 vehicles that may have a defect that would cause the fuel tank to melt.
The recall includes 250,547 Kia K5 vehicles, model years 2021-2024; and 85,043 Hyundai Sonata vehicles, model years 2020-2023, equipped with 1.6-liter turbocharged engines, according to documents filed with the U.S. Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
According to the documents, "A damaged check valve can allow air to enter the fuel tank, causing it to expand and contact hot exhaust components, melting the tank."
Dealers will inspect and replace the check valve. The fuel tank assembly will be inspected for damage and replaced if necessary.
Dealers also will inspect and update the engine control unit software. All repairs will be performed free of charge.
