Grand Junction and Fruita both received grants from the Colorado Department of Local Affairs to bolster their accessory dwelling unit (ADU) programs, which are aimed at producing smaller, cheaper infill housing units.

According to the state of Colorado, ADUs are “secondary housing units that can be detached or attached to a primary residence. They include their own living, sleeping, cooking, and bathroom facilities.”

Grand Junction received $325,000 to bolster its ADU production program, according to Housing Manager Ashley Chambers.

“We’ve really worked really hard the last couple of years around ADUs, that was part of our housing strategy implementation,” Chambers said.
