KANSAS CITY – The hallmark of Lou Anarumo’s defensive schemes against the Kansas City Chiefs in his six previous matchups against Patrick Mahomes, Andy Reid and company was – as much as he might dislike the term – the definition of a ‘bend, don’t break’ squad .
The Chiefs had averaged just a tick over 25 points – always more than 20 but never more than 31. Mahomes threw for 11 touchdowns in those 24 quarters of football, but only two came in the second half – and the Chiefs were forced into kicking nearly as many field goals (14) as touchdowns scored (15). Those Anarumo defenses forced eight turnovers and sacked the future-Hall of Fame quarterback 13 times.
