An Edinburgh man has opened up on his journey after a routine HIV test came back positive. Jakub says it came as a 'big surprise' after he visited the Chalmers Sexual Health Centre in the capital. Having just got out of a relationship , he decided to go in for a check-up.
After receiving his diagnosis , Jakub wasn't just dealing with living with the virus - but the 'emotional impact and mental challenges that came with it'. Looking back, Jakub said: "I was shocked and devastated.
"Being diagnosed with HIV for me didn't mean getting used to living with a virus; it was more about dealing with mental health difficulties arising from shame and stigma." Jakub was able to take the 'first steps to understanding and acceptance' thanks to his close friend.
