A significant rule change could see 1.4 million electric vehicle (EV) drivers in the UK facing a £267 charge. Following an announcement from the Labour Party government due on Wednesday, motorists who cover 8,900 miles or more could be hit with substantial costs.

From 2028, EV drivers may have to pay a supplement based on their annual mileage, in addition to their yearly road tax or Vehicle Excise Duty (VED). This could be calculated either through a self-declared estimate of distance or an odometer check during an MOT.
