ISLE OF WIGHT, Va. — A Newport News man who pleaded guilty in the 2023 shooting death of 18-year-old Aonesty Selby was supposed to learn his fate on Monday, but instead, his sentencing hearing was continued to another date.

Andarius McClelland admitted earlier this year to killing Selby in January 2023. Her body was discovered days after her disappearance, along a secluded hiking trail in rural Isle of Wight County.

Investigators said McClelland and Selby had been in a relationship and that he later confessed to shooting and killing her just days after her 18th birthday. However, Selby's mother, Amanda Mercer, disputes that claim, saying the two were not in a relationship. Instead, she believes her daughter was killed after turning McClelland down.
