Premier Doug Ford’s government is “tightening” bail requirements through a new bill aimed at making defendants pay cash security deposits before they are released from custody.
“We need a stronger bail system that puts the safety of innocent people first, and prevents dangerous offenders from cycling in and out of custody,” said Attorney General Doug Downey at Toronto Police Headquarters on Monday.
In the latest move to address bail reform, the proposed bill — to be introduced Tuesday — is intended to improve bail compliance, keep repeat offenders behind bars, and make it easier to collect forfeited bail payments when conditions are violated.
“We’re coming forward again with bold, innovative and practical solutions to enhance our public safety,” said Solicitor General Michael Kerzner.
