A federal judge in Roanoke sentenced the former Virginia Beach resident with a long history of mental illness to five years in prison Friday for threatening in 2022 to use an assault rifle to kill then-President Joe Biden.
Butler — who failed to prove that he was legally insane at the time of the offense — has said prison is the only place he feels safe from “gang stalkers,” delusional government officials whom he believed were threatening and harassing him under orders from the president.
Butler was being held for treatment at Catawba Hospital in December 2022 after suffering a mental health episode at a Northern Virginia grocery store. From the psychiatric facility in Roanoke County, he made a series
