We now have nine open power conference jobs after Cal decided to move on from ninth-year coach Justin Wilcox on Sunday.
Wilcox made four bowl games in his time with the Golden Bears and was eligible for a fifth this season, but the high point of his tenure came back in 2019 when his squad won eight games. He leaves Berkeley with a 48-55 record.
With Wilcox out, offensive analyst Nick Rolovich takes over as interim head coach. It isn't Rolovich's first foray into coaching at the power conference level, as he was previously the head coach at Washington State from 2020-21. He was also the head coach at Hawaii from 2016-19 and has previous experience as a West Coast assistant coach.
Rolovich was fired along with several assistants in October 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic when he failed to comply with the vaccine mandate for state employees in Washington. Rolovich was just 5-6 during his brief Washington State tenure, but he won 10 games in his previous job at Hawaii.
Rolovich will coach the Golden Bears for their regular season finale against SMU and their subsequent bowl game.
