SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) - A man has been taken into custody after being pulled by rescuers from the St. Joseph River in downtown South Bend.

Police shut down the Colfax Avenue bridge over the river for the rescue. It is expected to reopen soon.

Our team on scene saw the man get put into handcuffs and taken into an ambulance after being rescued.

We’re working to learn why the man was in the river and why he was taken into custody, but our team was following a police chase shortly before this happened, so they appear to be connected in some way. However, we are still waiting to get that confirmed.
