Brock is back. Brock Purdy, that is.

The San Francisco 49ers' quarterback returned to the lineup for the first time since September last week against the Arizona Cardinals. He led the team to their biggest win of the season in his hometown.

Now he and the 49ers return to their home at Levi's Stadium for a showdown in prime time against a former divisional foe.

The Carolina Panthers came back in the second half last week against Atlanta to force overtime and ultimately win 30-27. Quarterback Bryce Young broke 400 yards passing for the first time in his career as the Panthers pulled even with NFC South-leading Tampa Bay in the win column.

When Carolina first entered the NFL in 1995, the Panthers played San Francisco every year as a member of the NFC West. Since restructuring in 2002, the teams haven't played as often but have a key through line in recent years: Christian McCaffrey.

The former first-round pick by the Panthers came to San Francisco via trade in 2022 and won Offensive Player of the Year honors in 2023 on the team's run to Super Bowl 58. This week he faces his former team for the first time since that trade.

The two teams are chasing division leaders who faced off on "Sunday Night Football" in Week 12. A day later, they'll match up and try to keep up in a competitive NFC playoff picture.
