A young man has tragically lost his life after becoming trapped under a recovery truck in Lynton. The incident occurred on North Walk Hill at approximately 1.15pm on Saturday. Reports indicate that a collision took place involving a white Renault recovery truck and the victim, who has been identified locally as Adam Mewton, a 23-year-old from the Plymouth area.
Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed that Mewton was pronounced dead at the scene after becoming trapped under his own vehicle. Emergency services responded promptly, cordoning off the road, which remained closed until the early hours of Sunday.
Mewton was employed by Ivybridge firm Field Services Recovery. Following the news of his passing, tributes have poured in on social media, celebrating his life and character. One heartfelt message expressed the deep sorrow of a friend, stating, "This has taken me hours to be able to post. I so desperately want it to be a nightmare. No matter how long I sit here and think, I cannot think of a single person that has a bad word to say about you. You absolute one of a kind, with a permanent smile on your face and a work ethic like no other, just happy to help anybody."
A close family member shared their grief, saying, "You never gave two s**ts about what people thought and never let anyone tell you something couldn't be done. You were the hardest-working person I have ever known. We will continue to remember you and talk about you for the rest of our lives; you will be missed by everyone dearly. Let me tell you now, you will have the brightest and loudest send-off possible. I miss you, buddy!"
Another tribute reflected on cherished memories, stating, "We have so many fond memories of you. From always being [named person's] sidekick cutting the grass and marking the pitch on a Friday ready for Saturday's game to turning up weeks late or sometimes early for your haircut and so many more. You were always ready and willing to help anyone at any time. We had the honour of watching you grow into the kind, hardworking man you were today. Sleep easy, Adam, all our love."
The police are appealing for witnesses to the incident. They urge anyone with information or dashcam footage to contact them via their website or by calling 101, quoting log number 343 of 22/11/25.
