Everton midfielder Idrissa Gana Gueye was sent off in bizarre fashion on Monday as he engaged in an on-field fight with teammate Michael Keane.
The strange scene unfolded just 13 minutes into the match against Manchester United at Old Trafford. Gueye collected a loose ball inside his own box and tried to pass to Keane, who had vacated the space.
The ball instead went directly to United star Bruno Fernandes, who struck a very presentable chance off target.
Gueye was furious at Keane and immediately got into his teammate's face. What started as a heated debate turned into a shoving match, with goalkeeper Jordan Pickford trying to play peacemaker.
But it was already too late, per a VAR review. Referee Tony Harrington showed Gueye a straight red card after a review concluded that the midfielder had struck his teammate in the face.
“The referee’s call of red card to Gueye for violent conduct was checked and confirmed by VAR – with the action deemed to be a clear strike to the face of Keane,” read a Premier League statement.
Even down a player, Everton took a 1-0 lead into halftime thanks to a goal from Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall in the 29th minute.
Incredibly, the Toffees held onto that lead through the second half as well, coming away with three points after playing almost the entirely of the game down a man.
"It was just a moment of madness. It was obviously avoidable. All I can say is Idrissa apologized to us all at halftime and said his piece. That's all he can do and we move on from it," Dewsbury-Hall told Sky Sports after the game.
"The reaction from the lads after it was unbelievable, top tier. We could've easily crumbled, gone in on ourselves and lost the game comfortably, but it probably made us grow even more as a team.
"The manager just said he would deal with the situation another time and it was just about keeping to the plan that we had. He just wanted us to continue what we were doing and focus on the things we can change."
