KNOXVILLE, Tenn — The University of Tennessee announced Monday afternoon the retirement of Smokey XI from official mascot duties, effective immediately.

Since being named the university’s beloved mascot, Smokey XI has worked hard to adapt to the energetic atmosphere of game day at Neyland Stadium.

However, despite extensive efforts from his handlers, trainers and veterinary team over the last two years, Smokey XI’s "reserved temperament" continues to affect his comfort in public outings, the university said.

There will be no Smokey on the sidelines for this week's game against Vanderbilt.

According to his university, for his "well-being and happiness," Smokey XI will enter retirement to enjoy a quiet and peaceful life with his brother, his dad Smokey X and the Hudson family.
