The Ford government wants to end the practice of cashless bail for repeat violent offenders. Right now, even for people picked up and charged repeatedly for violent offences, judges are often releasing them just with a “promise to pay” bail commitment.
Under new legislation that is set to be introduced at Queen’s Park on Tuesday, the plan would be that the perps, or their sureties, have to pay up before they are released.
The new legislation will also seek to expand bail prosecution teams to argue against bail for repeat and violent offenders and seek to require those wearing ankle monitors to pay for at least part of the cost. Details of the changes would be included in the yet-to-be released legislation and the Ford government was short on details Monday morning.
