MADISON (WKOW) -- Wisconsin Republicans have proposed a bill that would place new requirements on prescribing and using abortion medication.

The bill would require medical abortion waste to be collected in a bag and returned to the prescribing physician's office. It also mandates a follow-up visit within seven days of taking the abortion-inducing drug.

Supporters say the measure would help keep endocrine disruptors out of wastewater. Under the bill, if such chemicals are detected, the drug manufacturer would be required to restore the environment.

Sen. LaToya Johnson, D-Milwaukee, criticized the proposal, calling it "one of the most disturbing pieces of legislation" she has seen in the State Senate. She said there is no evidence abortion pills harm the environment and described the bill
