Lying down or residing on public property has been outlawed within the city of Greenville.
In a 4-3 vote, Greenville City Council approved the final reading of an amended anti-camping ordinance prohibiting people, specifically those experiencing homelessness, from using public areas for living purposes at its Nov. 24 meeting.
Councilmembers Lillian Brock Flemming, Ken Gibson and Russell Stall voted against the ordinance. Voting in favor were John DeWorken, Dorothy Dowe, Wil Brasington and Mayor Knox White.
A version of the ordinance was originally presented to council in June. After receiving public pushback, council postponed voting on the ordinance to refine the law using stakeholder feedback. The updated ordinance received initial approval during council’s Nov. 10 meeting.
