CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte community members called on the city council on Monday to increase support for immigrants as Border Patrol continues its deployment in the area.

The request came as the city launched a program to provide $100,000 in emergency funding to impacted households. While many praised the initiative, some organizations said more action is needed.

Monday marked the first day residents could apply for a portion of the emergency funds, which are meant to help people pay rent or utility bills if they've been affected by the economic disruption. The disruption has included some local businesses closing.
