SPOKANE, Wash. -- The Spokane City Council approved a new transportation tax for commercial parking.

On Monday, the council voted 5-2 to pass the tax in order to fund transportation maintenance and safety improvements while establishing incentives for efficient land use within the city.

The commercial parking tax rate is 12% with credits to reduce rate for student and employee parking as well as residential parking.

“I appreciate everyone’s feedback around the commercial parking tax,” said Council Member Paul Dillon. “The delayed implementation time will give us more of an opportunity to work with stakeholders.
