The family of Suzie Smith, a REACH medical flight nurse from the Redding area who died after last month’s helicopter crash on Highway 50 in Sacramento, is spending its first holiday season without her. Her son, Gabriel Smith, says memories of her joy, humor, and traditions are helping them navigate the loss. To carry on her work, the family created the Our Angel That Flies Foundation, which plans medical trips to Central America and a scholarship for future nurses. Gabriel says his mother’s message was to stay connected, reconcile when needed, and not wait to tell people you love them. The family is leaning on each other and encouraging others to support neighbors who may be lonely during the holidays.
