I panic-ordered room service on the last night of my Disney cruise.
The end of my November preview sailing aboard Disney Cruise Line’s newest ship, Disney Destiny, was fast-approaching and I realized I hadn't tried a “Mickey bar.” I’d heard other guests hype up the treat – a Mickey-shaped ice cream bar officially called Mickey’s Premium Ice Cream Bar – over the previous two nights. Since I’d never had them at Disney parks, I decided I couldn’t leave without trying one.
By the time I finished stuffing clothes back into my suitcase ahead of disembarkation the next morning, a crew member delivered dessert to my cabin door. The creamy vanilla ice cream with a thin chocolate shell – a classic combination – was a sweet post-packing reward.
The Mickey bar was also among the best things I ate or drank on board Destiny, which set sail on its maiden voyage on Nov. 20. Here were the others.
Chicken tenders
As a first-time Disney cruise passenger, the chicken tenders also came highly recommended from other guests who had sailed with the line before. They didn’t disappoint.
A crew member delivered the food to my cabin – most room service items are included with the fare, so I took full advantage. The chicken was crunchy on the outside but moist and tender on the inside. The side of crispy, thin-cut fries held their own, too.
'I Live For Furs'
I enjoyed the musical stylings of a pianist at De Vil’s, a new Cruella de Vil-themed lounge, one evening while sipping this aptly named cocktail. The drink was smooth and lightly sweet, made with Drumshanbo Gunpowder gin, lemon, raspberry and vanilla.
Latte from Cove Café
I started multiple mornings at this adults-only lounge tucked away on Deck 13. The milk in my latte was well-steamed, but the views just outside the windows really made the experience: Coffee just seems to taste better when you’re looking at the ocean. Like other cafés on board, they could emboss the foam with images of beloved characters, too (I got Hercules).
Cape Malay shrimp curry
My entree at the Pride Lands: Feast of the Lion King dinner show was another highlight. The coconut-curry sauce was rich and creamy, served with basmati rice, cucumber sambal and butter roti on the side, perfect for dipping.
'Laughing Hyena'
This cocktail, made with Sango African Agave, cassis (blackcurrant liqueur), agave nectar, ginger beer and lime, was a light, refreshing complement to my three-course meal at Pride Lands.
Chicken tacos
I grabbed lunch at Donald’s Cantina during my first day on board – and came back twice throughout the sailing. I loaded up the build-your-own chicken tacos with rice, pico de gallo, and fajita veggies on flour tortillas, finishing them off with a chile-lime hot sauce. The portions were hearty but not overly filling and hit the spot.
Soft serve ice cream
On the other side of Deck 11, I treated myself to soft serve after lunch at Sweet Minnie’s Ice Cream. The chocolate-vanilla swirl was some of the best I’ve had on land or at sea, velvety and not overly sweet.
