WASHINGTON —
A federal judge dismissed the criminal cases against former FBI Director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James , citing the illegal appointment of the prosecutor by President Donald Trump.
The judge said the Justice Department unlawfully appointed Lindsey Halligan as interim U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia to prosecute the cases against Comey and James .
The orders do not address the allegations against Comey and James but focus on Halligan's appointment.
A White House spokeswoman said the rulings will "not be the final word on the matter."
