ONA — The buck firearms season in West Virginia opened to hunters Monday.
The state’s two-week hunting season runs through Dec. 7 in every county except Logan, McDowell, Mingo and Wyoming, which remain closed to firearms deer hunting, according to a news release from Gov. Patrick Morrisey’s office. Hunters may kill one buck with a base license.
“The buck firearms season is a time-honored tradition that brings generations of West Virginians together in the woods each fall,” West Virginia Division of Natural Resources Director Brett McMillion said in the release.
The WVDNR is currently running its Big Buck Photo Contest. Eligible hunters who submit a photo of a buck legally harvested during the 2025 season will be entered into a prize drawing.
Photos must be submitted by Jan. 9. To subm
