GREENVILLE, S.C. —
The city of Greenville is cracking down on homelessness.
Monday night, the Greenville City Council passed a "no camping" ordinance at its final reading. It was a 4-3 vote with amendments.
Several items must be running or in place and certified by the city manager before the ordinance goes into effect.
Those items include a homeless shelter center, a 24/7 restroom, and storage for personal items. The ordinance also says trauma-informed training must be in place, along with an outreach contract by the city manager. A warning must be issued, and law enforcement can give rides to places of help.
A violation would still be a misdemeanor punishable by a fine and/or jail time.
There is also a policy for periodic review of the ordinance.
