Paul Doyle, the 54-year-old suspect in the Liverpool parade crash, appeared in court today as his trial commenced. He faces multiple charges following a serious incident during the Premier League title celebrations in May, where a car drove into a crowd of supporters in Liverpool city centre. The crash occurred on Water Street shortly after 6pm on 26 May, injuring over 100 pedestrians, including children and a 78-year-old woman. Of those injured, 50 required hospital treatment but were later discharged. Doyle, dressed in a black suit with a white shirt and grey tie, appeared visibly distressed in the courtroom. He held his head in his hands and wiped away tears as he pleaded not guilty to four amended charges. The charges include causing grievous bodily harm with intent to an 11-year-old boy, which has been altered to an attempt to cause grievous bodily harm. Similarly, a charge related to a 12-year-old boy has been changed from causing grievous harm to wounding with intent. Other charges involving two individuals, Hannah O’Neill and Stefan Dettlaf, have also been amended to causing grievous bodily harm with intent. A court sketch captured the moment Doyle showed signs of distress as 33 potential jurors were called for selection. Ultimately, seven men and five women were sworn in as jurors, with two women serving as reserves. In total, Doyle faces 31 charges, including 17 counts of attempting to cause grievous bodily harm with intent. The complainants include a six-month-old baby, children aged between seven months and 13 years, and several adults. Additionally, Doyle is charged with grievous bodily harm with intent against nine individuals, including Helen Gilmore and Anna Bilonozhenko. He also faces three counts of wounding with intent against a 12-year-old boy and other charges related to affray and dangerous driving. Doyle had previously pleaded not guilty to these charges during a plea and trial preparation hearing in September. The trial is expected to draw significant attention as it unfolds in the coming days.
