PORTSMOUTH — State championship? Check.
New England championship? Check.
Regional championship? Check.
National championship? That answer will have to wait until Dec. 6, when Portsmouth High senior Sean Gray lines up against the nation’s best cross-country runners.
Gray, one of the top athletes PHS has ever produced, captured the boys’ title at Saturday’s Nike Cross Regionals Northeast in Wappingers Falls, New York. He tore through the five-kilometer course at Bowdoin Park in 15 minutes, 21.2 seconds — the second-fastest time ever recorded there. It was a razor-thin finish, with the top five runners separated by just seven seconds.
With the win, Gray became the first Portsmouth runner to claim the regional individual crown and only the third from Rhode Island to do so.
