PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Thanksgiving holiday travel is in full swing!

AAA projects nearly 82 million people nationally will travel 50 miles or more this Thanksgiving travel period, which is a 2% boost from last year.

AAA designates its Thanksgiving travel period as beginning Tuesday and running through the following Monday.

Passengers were ready to board their trains at 30th Street Station in Philadelphia on Tuesday.

"I'm going to Washington, DC, to visit family," said Daniel Pettyjohn of Southwest Philadelphia.

From Tuesday through Sunday, Amtrak is adding extra cars to its Northeast Regional routes.

Amtrak is also increasing trip frequencies for popular destinations along the northeast corridor, including Philadelphia, Boston, New York and DC.
