Millions of workers across the UK could be at risk of missing a crucial deadline and facing fines from HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC). Most people who are required to file a Self Assessment must pay the tax they owe by 11.59pm on January 31, 2026.

People who are required to submit an online tax return must also do so by the same date or face a penalty for late filing. Many people who are new to the Self Assessment systems must have their Unique Taxpayer Reference in order to file properly for the 2024/25 tax year.
