Thomas King, author of ‘The Inconvenient Indian’ and whose works often centre on Indigenous storylines, has believed for his entire life that he is part Cherokee.
The Guelph-based author has now revealed in a Globe and Mail op-ed published Monday that he recently discovered that he is not, in fact, Indigenous.
In his essay titled “A most inconvenient Indian,” a play on his 2012 best-seller The Inconvenient Indian, King says he became aware of rumours that he was not Native a few years ago but opted to ignore the questions of his heritage.
But this year, King reached out to U.S. organization Tribal Alliance Against Frauds, and after an investigation into his past, they found no Cherokee heritage.
