NEWPORT, Ore. — A federal judge has ordered U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem to return a Coast Guard rescue helicopter to the city of Newport days after community members filed a lawsuit to block the move.
Judge Ann Aiken at the U.S. District Court in Eugene granted a request from the nonprofit Newport Fishermen's Wives and Lincoln County for a temporary restraining order in the case pending further proceedings.
The helicopter normally stationed at a small USCG facility in Newport was abruptly moved 70 miles south to North Bend, and the plaintiffs argued that DHS was illegally shuttering the facility without any public notice or opportunity for comment.
