ASHEVILLE – City Council plans to announce its new city manager Dec. 5.

A Nov. 21 statement from spokesperson Kim Miller said the city’s nationwide search resulted in over 50 applicants. City Council has identified a candidate to be named at the “completion of the hiring process.”

City Manager Debra Campbell, who announced earlier this year she would retire in December, has led the city for seven years. Before being appointed to Asheville’s top non-elected job, she worked as assistant city manager for Charlotte. She is Asheville's first Black city manager and the first woman to hold the position in a long-term capacity.

The city hired Chapel Hill-based executive search firm Developmental Associates, LLC, in August to lead its search, through a $36,750 contract.
